Listing photo checker
A free tool for real estate photographers and agents. Drop in up to 10 listing photos and get an instant check of resolution, aspect ratio, exposure, blown-out windows, crushed shadows and leaning verticals. It runs in your browser: no signup, and your photos are never uploaded.
What the checker measures
- Resolution: flags a long edge under 1024px as too small and under 2048px as tight.
- Aspect ratio: matches 3:2, 4:3, 16:9, 5:4 or 1:1 within 2%, and notes portrait photos.
- Exposure: average brightness below 33% reads dark, above 73% reads very bright.
- Blown highlights: share of pure-white pixels; 1% or more is flagged, 5% or more needs fixing.
- Crushed shadows: share of pure-black pixels; 2% or more is flagged.
- Leaning verticals: a lean of 0.7° or more is flagged, 2° or more needs fixing.
These are ShotVista's rules of thumb, not an MLS standard. Your MLS may have its own size and editing rules.
Questions
- Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
- No. The checker runs entirely in your browser. The photo is read into a canvas on your device and never sent to ShotVista or anyone else.
- Which file types work?
- JPG, PNG and WebP, plus any other format your browser can display. RAW files (CR2, NEF, ARW, DNG) cannot be read by browsers, so export a JPG first. ShotVista itself accepts RAW uploads.
- Are these MLS requirements?
- No. MLS photo rules differ by MLS and change over time, so always check your own MLS. The thresholds here are ShotVista’s rules of thumb for photos that look good on listing sites, and they are listed on this page.
- How is the vertical tilt measured?
- The photo is split into small blocks. In each block the dominant edge direction is measured from brightness gradients; blocks whose edge is close to vertical (walls, door frames) vote, and the result is the weighted median lean. Photos without strong vertical lines are reported as not measurable.
